Conservative Free Republic blog in free speech flap after racial slurs directed at Obama children

advertisement

"A typical street whore." "A bunch of ghetto thugs." "Ghetto street trash." "Wonder when she will get her first abortion."

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative 'Free Republic' blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama's 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, "To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds."

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It held a grain of truth because I would make monkey sounds to entertain children but in this context I suppose it would hold some form of negative connotation.

Now before some one posts and says "Some people called Bush a monkey, were was the outrage then" lets lay down the fact that calling a white person a monkey does not carry the same racial undertones that it does for African Americans.

It's like saying that a white person loves watermelon or fried chicken.

And if you don't understand that fact, it still doesn't change it.

To each their own...but this article is one of no importance. I am deeply saddened by a newspaper even writing an article about an "internet blog". I have seen much worse and I have a feeling this article is just to keep that one trump card alive: The race card.

As some have said these bloggers probably aren't even old enough to vote, so don't put too much thought or worry into a single blog using their 1st amendment rights...

Super Saiyan, I am definitely not surprised.....If one is going to go after Obama's tepid policies, one does not have to use personal racist remarks....one can use social and class critiques, without being racist. These right wingers are clueless about critiques.

And going after children is below scum, below humanity. Children are still children who have their own identities yet to develop and cannot be smeared with racist B.S. or even the sins of their parents. It is unfair.

To throw all Republicans in the category of racist is just as disgusting and degrading. Apparently not voting for Barack Obama is enough to be deem as such. By the grossly uninformed.

Who is watching the Obama children and supervising their activities while their parents are schlepping around on their "official" duties?" Maybe it is just one big political press opportunity using the family for show. Did all of the other foreign leaders bring kids and families to these meetings?

I wonder how much it cost the taxpayers to baby-sit and entertain the Obama kids on this trip? Maybe they just have a special detail of a bunch of Journeymen Level Secret Service Agents who make them popcorn, read stories, play board games, tell them to wash their hands, put on their pajamas, go to bed and not argue, etc. Isn't that what they are trained for? That and Presidential Protection, anti-counterfeiting and... I heard the Obamas originally had requested a squad of eunuchs, but the Secret Service didn’t have any. A group is currently in training at the academy.

I remember Amy Carter and Chelsea traveling with their parents on these trips. There was an article in one of the papers (sorry I read a lot not sure which one, The Examiner is 1st guess) that said Obama is picking up the full cost of his family traveling with him except for security and transpo (hotel, food, sight seeing etc). Since their security detail would be with them anyway that leaves the transpo, which was going there anyway so really isn't costing the taxpayer. And the security detail has been "babysitting" presidential children for ages. Who watched Chelsea, Amy, the Kennedy's on travel and in the WH, how much did that cost the tax payers?

My last paragraph was an attempt at sarcastic humor. I just needed a lead in and used the cost issue. I didn’t say it was good humor, but it was at least sarcasm. Please if you know of any eunuchs who were applying for jobs based on my post tell them it was a joke. Enough about that.

However from a more serious perspective my first paragraph stands. Who does look after the children on these trips? I am sure the Mr & Mrs are extremely busy with "matters of state" political and social and the children's needs are probably not in the forefront. The USSS has a protective responsibility, but will not serve as a sitter (other than an adult present).

When I traveled with my kid I hired sitters in the cities I went to from the hotel etc but for security reasons I expect they bring one with them. The Obama's pay for that out of their personal fortunes so it's either Mrs Robinson (?) for free or they hire a sitter I suppose. Other Presidents ended their terms with the same number of kids they started with (except Jackie) so I guess something works.

Grandma is not getting paid! She lives in the Whitehouse with the family. She is the President's mother-in-law so the "mama obama" is incorrect sarcasim and insult.

What is the big deal here, Katlin? WHO looked after all the other children that have been raised in the Whitehouse while their father was president? It was staff and not free - they received a salary. No one even questioned any other President's child care issues or the fact that their wives and children traveled across the world with them on numerous occassions.

Unlike Presidents before President Obama, I do not recall any statements that they - the President - was paying for any of their children's expenses during the term of their Presidency!!

It was reported back before the Obama's moved into the Whitehouse....their home by the way, that Mrs. Obama's mother - the girls grandmother - would be moving in to help with their care!

In recent media coverage, we learned that the family eats dinner together every nite - with the exception of Presidential duties that occassionallly do not permit the President to eat with them. The girls make their own beds and keep their own rooms clean - whitehouse employees do not! Mrs. Obama stated that they would have "chores" as they always have and that would not change......part of the way this couple raises their children, regardless of where they happen to live! The girls and/or Mrs. Obama walk their dog, Bo....not the staff!! It is also public knowledge, thanks to the media and all the stories covering the Whitehouse, including interviews and tours of the Whitehouse, that President and Mrs. Obama spend quality time every evening with their children - as any family. Also, even the Presidents schedule/routine of what he does AFTER family time was also very well documented!

During their long campaign for office, they paid for all the clothing for themselves and their children. Now, President and Mrs. Obama pay for all the clothing and personal items for themselves and their children AND those of Grandma!!

REALLY Katlin - your ignorance and racism is showing and it isn't pretty! Actually, your grossly inacurate posts have become a sense of humor for other posters!!

The first ammendment does not protect child abuse, and teaching children racism or any other kind of prejudice - homophobia, anti-Semetism, misogyny, misandry, discrimination of age or orientation and so forth - is child abuse. It's psychological child abuse.

The mention of psychological child abuse coming from an internet blog is so thin it is unbearable considering that the people being talked about were not even partcipating in the blog.

It's not unberable if this person has children or neices and nephews and they're teaching that filth in their blog to them.

It is inflammatory because you "made up laws" or "stretched them" to suit your opinion.

I didn't make up any laws or stretch them to suit my opinion. Teaching children to be racist or prejudice in any way is child abuse, they're abusing the children's minds and hurting them, and it's gearing for discrimination and hate crimes the children may commit in their later years.

A parent may have the freedom to raise their child the way they see fit, but they don't have the right to teach their children to hate people because of their race, sexuality, gender or faith.

There you go again...who was teaching anyone anything? And, ahem, it isn't child abuse. You could teach your child anything you want. I suppose you would say a parent teaching their children to swear or flip people off would be child abuse?

prejudice in any way is child abuse, they're abusing the children's minds and hurting them,

Christ, unsubstantiated opinion wherein you try to prove it as law. watch closely as I mimic your line of thinking:

Teaching children to swear or make obscene geustures in any way is child abuse, they're abusing the children's minds and hurting them, and it's gearing for outlash and rudeness which may result in crime in their later years.

See? I just inserted my opinion, made it sound pretty, and called it fact. Simple.

No one was teaching anyone anything...two words: INTERNET BLOG. Stop trying to make this into something it is not...

You see the problem I have with your argument is this:

The person who wrote that blog should be ashamed and disgusted with themselves. If they have any children, they should be arrested for child abuse and the children should be taken away.

If the person who wrote the blog never TOLD or deliberately SHOWED his/her children the content of this blog, how could it be abuse?

Answer that (with proof and evidence) and we will be done with this conversation forever.

Do you remember when I said you stretched or broke laws to fit your agenda? Well your quote says it all.

The point is Letterman was not talking about Willow and anyone who says they thought he was is lying to try to puff the story up. Every sane and rational person knew he was not talking about Willow.

"Every sane and rational person knew he was not talking about Willow."

That explains why republicans thought the opposite.

What's funny is why Republicans don't criticize Bristol for being a whore. Apparently, if you're not a conservative and you get knocked up, it's because of liberal teachings. But if you're Sarah Palin's daughter, it's okay because it's just proof that you're a real human being, and human beings are allowed to make mistakes.

Check out youtube videos of orielly criticizing britney spears' younger sister for getting knocked up, but defending bristol.

Furthermore, calling out on conservatives' hypocrisy, as they act holier than thou, with their bible, only to break their own rules - premarital sex, adultery, lying - is COMPLETELY different then using racial slurs at an 11 year old just for the hell of it. That's the point, mavrick. There's your freaking clue.

Republicans always preach that if they had things their way with their rules, there would be less sinners, and they're the only chance Americans have of not plunging into hell, yet... Sanford, Ensign, Palin, omg too many to count. Let me just link you to the newsvine article.

Oh right, but Bill Clinton lied about oral sex. Then again, I guess he's just not a good Christian, like all those other rejects (listed in the link).

Incase you think I went off topic, most of this was in response to mavrick's comment, "...but when the liberals do it its ok. Talk about your double standard..."

                              Yeah, tell me about it.

Funny how this "newspaper" sees it it fit to have an article written about a silly blog. By its nature, a public blog is open to everybody who has an internet connection. As any Viner knows, any outrageous statements can be posted.

Why this rag that pretends itself to be a newspaper covers only the incendiary remarks on conservative blogs but completely ignores liberal ones can be answered by two words: liberal bias.

Oh sure xerxes - that must be why during the week(s) surrounding Bristol's "joke" and then Palin throwing in the towel there were at least 30, if not more, threads SUPPORTING the Palins. It got to the point where I went to the GARDENING site looking for something to read. Last week there were so many rabid rightwing posts up I was wondering if they had passed over me to let me know this was no longer a forum for ALL people. That's on top of the many civil, thoughtful conservative threads. Couldn't open a thread without Obama bashing, Atheist bashing, liberal bashing, democrat bashing, pro life bashing, Obama's foreign policy bashing, Obama's economy bashing - on and on. A lot of conservatives on this site don't know how to present their opinion without coming out of the blocks in full ""attack tear down and discredit the liberals" mode. And for the most part NV doesn't choose what is covered, the many members of NV community do, so if you don't like what you are reading why don't you write an article, or seed one. Like SO MANY conservatives on this site.

Sure, Palin is in the NYC area with her daughter for a charity event and a baseball game. Lettermans skit of jokes is based on the fact she's in town, but the one 'joke' about A-Rod with 'daughter' during a baseball game is directed at somebody not even there....yea, right. If you can't see that, then may I quote from my favorite movie:

"How can you be so obtuse?"

The enemies of Liberty and Justice will never go away, they are patient and persistent. If they cannot win with brute force; as was the case in WW-II, then they will persist with their efforts off the physical battlefield, and onto the battlefield of ideas and public discussion. They will try to sell their ideology on the Internet, print and electronic medias. They will slowly but surely advance their ideology over time to make it more palatable to the American masses, who were taught to believe in the America of Equality, Freedom, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

The ideals that America was founded upon, are the opposite of the racist right wing ideology.

In the real world Americans imprisoned and executed Japanese soldiers and officers for torturing American prisoners of war with water-boarding.

In the right wing ideologues make believe world, water-boarding is not torture it is "enhanced interrogation" therefore we did not torture.

In the real world we all have to find common ground and work together for solutions to correct the serious problems that were created and left behind by the last administration, for the ultimate good of all.

In the right wing ideologues make believe world, it is better for the president to fail, so that they can be right and say "I told you so" and in that way get back to majority power in both houses to continue their toxic right wing agenda for America.

In the real world Obama won the election of '08 fair and square, with clear majorities in the popular and electoral votes.

In the right wing ideologues make believe world, Obama won the Presidency because of Acorn, which stole the election for him, and some of them are making treasonous unpatriotic calls for succession and the break up of the Union. All the while wrapped in the flag, hypocritically proclaiming their patriotism.

In the real world President Obama is as John McCain said: " is a decent family man" and his wife is a good woman and a wonderful mother, and their daughters are lovely you girls who will grow up to be intelligent beautiful women.

In the right wing ideologues make believe world, the Obama family consist of: "typical street whore"...."a bunch of Ghetto thugs"..."Ghetto street trash"..."wonder when she will get her first abortion"

I believe that those idiotic racist stereo types; expose what is really driving all of the Obama Haters. President Obama is the product of African and European genes, he is a shinning example of an intelligent, thoughtful manly man who is self disciplined and in control of himself. He is an inspirational orator and leader. He came from modest means and worked very hard to accomplish the impossible, and Millions of people all around the world from almost every continent see that, and as a result; he has become a popular and celebrated person all over the world.

The right wing racist ideologues have nurtured their precious race mythology for decades, and here comes Obama: a shinning example that contradicts everything they have ever believed and stood for. The myth of the inferior sub-human African gene mixing with the superior European gene producing a sub-human mud beast and corrupting the purity of the white race.

President Obama is a powerful example that debunks all of the failed racist mythology. That right wing race mythology cannot explain an Obama because; the mythology was an utter and complete lie, and now that lie is exposed and that has driven the ignorant right wing Nazi racists, insane with a hysterical pathological hatred of the man. His very existence has destroyed their racist arguments, and so all they have left is to attack...attack...attack, they are throwing a lot of s--t at him hoping something will stick. Pretty soon they will throw the kitchen sink, anything as long as it diminishes this example that exposed their lie.

It is up to us all who believe in Freedom and Equality to not remain silent, but to speak up and challenge the gossipy, childish, name calling Nazi liars, when ever they try to sell their excrement. They are not upset with Obama for political reasons, they are upset for racist reasons and the article that hippiechick68 seeded, clearly shows that.

So, making fun of the Alaskan Governors 14 year old daughter being violated at a baseball game should be a matter of who can outsmart who?

Except of course it is a bald faced lie to say the joke was about Willow and anyone who says it was knows they are a liar, so why should anyone gives a rat's backside about them or their "opinion"?

Anyone who contends this joke was about Willow and not Bristol is a piece of crap liar and they know it.

                              hypocrite much?

You ok with an attack on palin's kids weather its the older one or the younger one.

The pigs spewing the garbage on that blog drag the whole nation down in the eyes of the world. Yes, they have the freedom of speech, but they have the hearts and souls of sick vermin.

                              Fits you well dosent it?

                              R. Donald Snyder,

The reason mavrick insists it's about Willow, not Bristol, is because if he admits he knew Letterman was directing the joke at Bristol, then he wouldn't have point.

Just like Bush wouldn't admit that he cherry picked intelligence about Iraq, and that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, because then Bush wouldn't have a good reason to invade Iraq.

To prove their point, repugs like mavrick have to base their arguments on lies. Then again, I know for a fact that the sky is blue because it was painted that way by a HUUUGE BRUSH... that's invisible. Since only God can ever use an invisible brush of that size, it proves that God exists. (I'm NOT an atheist by the way. I do believe in God, but not for that reason. That was just the analogy that came to mind to help explain how repugs think. Because of A, B is true. Oh, it doesn't matter that A is false. A was only mentioned to justify B.)

Yes it does matter which daughter the joke was about. One is an innocent young girl. The other is an unwed teen-aged mother whose own mother painted a target on her back by parading her out with her redneck fiancee in the national spotlight...all for votes. Then, when she herself could have slipped back out of the public eye, Bristol herself re-painted that same target by becoming a national spokesperson for, of all things, abstinence only. What an effing joke! Her actions begged to be made fun of by comedians and I have not even a tiny bit of sympathy for her. If she can't run with the big dogs, then she needs to keep her ass on the porch. It was her choice to draw attention to herself and she should not have been surprised that she got it. It's a hard world Bristol. You want to play? Then you got to pay. She asked for it, she got it. Tough sh*it for her.

As for you Mav, I'm still glad you're a fan. Like I said, people like you are the only reason I bother to post. Give us a big kiss there baby! MUAH!

Yep, USA is seen as a rascist nasty nation.......you have kind of moved yourselves towards freedom...however we all know the truth.

The truth is that Americans aren't afraid to face racism. It's embarrasses us, but we don't hide it under a rug. We illuminate it.

A nation that claims no racism is a nation that enables it.

                              Americans are better than that.

Bristol is an adult, she joins Chelsea Clinton who was the brunt of John McCain's jokes at a republican dinner when she was 18, The Johnson daughters who were young adults when Johnny Carson used to make fun at their expense, Amy Carter who was ridiculed for her looks as a youngster and into adulthood, the Bush daughters (over 18) who were hounded until the Bushes said enough. Except for Amy once the "kids" turn 18 they have been fair game, children have not. Why should Palin's adult children be different? Bristol spent weeks seeking TV appearances, magazine covers and other exposure for her cause, being a celebrity has its costs.

they think if someone does something 'bad', they get to do it back. Look how many of them brought up Clinton to DEFEND Sanford! It's frustrating. David Letterman's 'joke' is old news, and he apologized (twice). This blog is saying much worse things about Sasha, Malia, and Michelle. Letterman didn't call Bristol or Willow 'sluts' or 'trailer trash' or suggest Willow would have an abortion, soon.

The Obamas have made efforts to insulate their children from the media. Sarah Palin paraded her children in front of the media and tried to use them for political gain. There is a difference.

Racism was the subject of that blog - children just thrown in to be even more disgusting.

If you think that racism is old and of no effect - you either extremely undereducated, too young to have experience what this country went to in order to rid this country of bigotry and racism.....the lives that were lost - of all colors and nationalities - or simply just not too bright over all.

NO the liberal democrats like throw around the word racism whenever they have something said about them with which they disagree..they find it a convenient scapegoat. they use the word racism in an attempt to silence any dissent or argument. well that is no longer working.

I suggest that what was said about the obama children is because of the road the dems started down with their laughter and condoning at what was said about the palin children, and now they do not like it coming back at them. It is not 2 different things it is tied together and it is either wrong for all or it is condoned...so which is it?

                              Katlin -

Once again.....think before you post, sweetie.

Nothing racist was said, blogged, or printed about the Palin family - or any member thereof.

You obviously do not know the definition of the word "racist" or you would know it when you read it or hear it.

This post simply made no sense at all. Just another angry, uneducated attack on our President.....who happens to be black.

Grow up child and if you don't know anyone to ask - look up the past history of racism in America for even just the past 50 years. When was the first black American allowed to vote? When were black Americans allowed to enter thru the front door of any business and be served or assisted just as any white person would be? Who was the first black female - or either sex for that matter - who refused to get up and give her seat on the public transportation bus to a white person? Most of these events happened in less than fifty years ago!

How many white and black people, of all ages, were murdered for simply standing up for the rights of ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS - even those who happen to be non-white?!

Your education appears to be solely from whacked out radio and television talk show hosts. Even THEY at least know the history of this country!!

Very true though Willow might not be aware of it because her mommy said it was about her. Thats cruel to Willow.

The only negative mention of Willow was a reference to Todd engaging in incestuous statutory rape with his Daughters on Saturday night live, BEFORE Sarah gleefully appeared to make an ass out of herself.

Where was the outrage? That is in an instance most definitely beyond the pale, But apparently not so outrageous that Sarah would not lend her star power to the franchise for her own self promotion.

Yea, Letterman lame joke is a lot like grown men and women calling an 11 year old black girl "Ghetto Trash" and "slut" for wearing a T-shirt.

Gop is the party of really bad analogies.

While every man woman and child has the freedom of speech, it seems not everyone has the intelligence to use it in a proper manner.

My take on it is to paraphrase a line from a Homer Simpson episode where he said "I like my homosexuals flay-a-ming." I like my racists to be out in the open. It's always good to be able to ID and note who they are. If we can expose them, then we can adminsiter disinfectant. It's the racists that lay low that cause the most problems - like those in board rooms and managers who don't want to hire minorities.

The blog is free to say whatever they want - I won't impinge or want to impinge on their right to free speech. By the same token, we, that don't like it are free to say whatever we want about them.

The more attention you give these people, the more they like it. Talking about them and what they say, especially in forums on sites with many members, is spreading "their" word and showing their followers that they do, indeed, matter.

It's not a free speech issue. No self-respecting company or webmaster should allow such filth on any site but what is allowed to be posted is purely at the discretion of the owner of the domain.

'bout time America got tired of mean though. It's just more of the worst of our society showing their true colors loud and clear to the public eye.

This is not a question of law it is a question of being civilized. Racial Slurs against the President's young children is totally uncalled for in any communication.

As a conservative I know racial slurs are wrong ,it was the way I was raised. I condemn those actions and words. Children should not be invovled in that type of conversation.

Those individuals do not have conservative or Republican values, as article 8 of the 1860 charter calls for the end of slavery. Equality is fundamental to the Republican ideals from the beginning.

I also condemn qoutes such as " The court had not ruled out the use of racial predjudice in the future" ...an Obama quote. I dont need a supreme court to tell me that basing anything on someones skin tone wrong, but some want to have a Justice who would base cases on skin tone. I stongly disagree with that policy it is racism plain and simple. Ammendments 14 and 15 guarantee the rights of the constitution to all...any legislation or court case that does not apply to all based on race is wrong

                                It's not 1860 anymore.

I agree that Republicans and Conservatives need not be defined by their fringe.

People who are reduced to picking on kids, no matter who their parents are are doing it because they are intellectually impotent at anything else. And that kind of post confirms it and renders them even more intellectually impotent.
